Globalization, Development and the State

Globalization, Development and the State The peformance of India and Brazil since 1990
Jorgen Dige Pedersen

- p 26 Key lesson from developments..has been the imperative for a country seeking economic development... to possess an effective state.
-  Discussion on developmental states has - (a) Importance on state intervention for eco success (b) concerned with state-society links (c) been increasingly concerned wiht capacities of state or state apparatus.
- Peter Evans (1995) focued on productive state-society relationship 'embedded autonomy'
- Some negativity in terms of the ability of new developmental states to prosper as the previous Asian Mirical based on changed economic circustances.
- Interesting concept of "international agential power" of the state - where developing states can shape international debate free of international structure requirements or interest of international non-state actors. It is ehnahced where the state is embedded wtithin a broad range of domestic social actors (Hobson 2000).
- Also of interest - the important of internal organisation of the state in terms of the developmental stregnth of the state.
