- Direct political control and administration of overseas territories needs to be seen in terms of the expansion of capitalism - it was a convenient method of organising the production systems and laying the infrastructure in the ancillary economies at that time. A lot of it driven by lending of capital and seen by many as an economic necessity.
- Neocolonial period has several theories - modernizaation theories which accepted the structure of the relationships between rich and poor countries had developed during proceeding epochs of capitalist expansion. They wrote a 'how to develop' manual - they were problem solving and policy oriented on the backdrop of cold war and political independance and liberation of countries from colonialis that USA favoured to keep 3rd world out of communist hands. Sawa that aid would not bear fruit unless accompaied by social, cultural and political changes. When traditional institutios or values did not fit they were considered dysfunctional.
- Dependancy theory - emerged in post war but had roots in imperialism theories. Asked question of what it was about capitalism that drove it to extend beyond its own borders. I contends thaat dependancy is a result of penetration of colonial capital -? a distorted structure of economy and socienty was created in colonial countries which would reproduce eco stagnation and pauperization of hte masses. This was due to subordinatio of the economy to the structure of advanced capitalist countries and he extreme dependancy on overseas markets for capital and technology sourcing. Also argue that there is an inherant transfer of value due to unequal term sof exchange due to divisions of labour
